Hongyan traces its identity to the Hongyan heavy truck operation in Chongqing, a historic Chinese commercial vehicle base associated with the name "Hongyan", meaning "red rock". The modern SAIC Hongyan brand grew out of the 2007 joint venture SAIC-IVECO Hongyan Commercial Vehicle Co., Ltd.
, combining SAIC Motor, Iveco technology and Chongqing's established truck manufacturing heritage. Its branding has consistently emphasized the Chinese name 红岩 and a strong red visual identity, linking the marque to industrial strength, resilience and its Chongqing origins. In recent years the company has used the English name SAIC Hongyan alongside the Chinese logotype to support domestic and export truck markets.
