What makes this mark recognizable?

Identity cues, heritage, and visual details to keep in mind before the asset lands in your UI.

NEVS was founded in 2012 in Trollhättan, Sweden, after acquiring the main assets of Saab Automobile following Saab's bankruptcy. Its identity used a clean, all-caps NEVS wordmark rather than the historic Saab griffin, reflecting the company's legal separation from Saab's former brand marks and its focus on electric mobility.

The blue wordmark and restrained typography aligned the company with Swedish engineering heritage while presenting NEVS as a future-oriented electric vehicle manufacturer. NEVS later operated under Evergrande ownership and entered a hibernation phase in 2023 after financial difficulties at its parent group.

How the mark got here

The identity shifts that explain the NEVS logo in use today.

Origins

National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB was established in 2012 and acquired the main assets of Saab Automobile AB, Saab Automobile Powertrain AB and Saab Automobile Tools AB after Saab's bankruptcy. The new company was based in Trollhättan, using the former Saab production site and engineering base while positioning itself around electric vehicles rather than conventional combustion models.

Saab connection and brand separation

NEVS initially obtained rights to use the Saab name for vehicles, but it did not acquire the Saab griffin logo. After ownership and licensing changes, Saab AB withdrew permission for automotive use of the Saab name, which made the NEVS brand identity more important as the company's own public-facing mark.

Electric vehicle development

NEVS developed electric versions of the Saab 9-3 platform and presented vehicles such as the NEVS 9-3 EV, with production and business plans focused heavily on China. The company also explored autonomous mobility through concepts including the Sango and the PONS mobility system.

Evergrande ownership and hibernation

China Evergrande Group's electric vehicle subsidiary acquired control of NEVS in 2019, later integrating the company into Evergrande New Energy Vehicle Group. In 2023, NEVS announced that it was entering hibernation, reducing operations while seeking buyers or investors for its remaining projects and assets.

When the logo changed

A compact record of redesigns, visual turns, and the reasons the mark moved.

2012

NEVS wordmark introduced

The company adopted a simple uppercase NEVS wordmark, generally presented in blue. The mark used the initials of National Electric Vehicle Sweden instead of the Saab griffin, creating a legally distinct identity for the new electric vehicle company.

Reason for redesign: NEVS needed its own corporate identity after acquiring Saab Automobile assets without acquiring all historic Saab brand symbols.

2016

Greater emphasis on NEVS branding

After the Saab name could no longer be used for new cars, the NEVS wordmark became the company's main automotive and corporate identifier. The identity remained minimal, technical and focused on the company name.

Reason for redesign: The change followed the end of automotive licensing for the Saab name, requiring NEVS to rely on its own brand presentation.

What to preserve in production

Shape, color, and type cues that keep NEVS recognizable at app scale.

Composition

The NEVS identity is centered on a horizontal, all-caps wordmark. Its composition is straightforward and corporate, with no animal emblem, shield or pictorial badge, which separates it visually from the former Saab griffin identity.

Symbol

The letters stand for National Electric Vehicle Sweden, making the mark a direct abbreviation of the company's purpose and origin. The absence of a legacy emblem signals a forward-looking electric mobility company rather than a continuation of Saab as a brand.

Lettering

The typography is geometric and modern, using uppercase letterforms to create a stable engineering-led impression. The wordmark prioritizes legibility and corporate clarity over decorative automotive heritage cues.

Color

Blue has been the most associated color in NEVS branding, connecting the company to Swedish visual associations, technology and trust. The restrained palette supports a clean electric vehicle identity rather than a performance or luxury positioning.

Shape

The mark is primarily rectangular in visual footprint because it is built from a horizontal wordmark. Its lack of enclosing badge makes it adaptable for websites, corporate signage, presentations and vehicle-related communications.

Heritage

NEVS inherited Trollhättan's automotive engineering environment and production infrastructure, but not the full Saab visual heritage. Its logo history therefore reflects continuity of place and engineering talent, paired with a conscious visual break from the Saab griffin.

Market context

The NEVS name carries Swedish national and industrial references through both its wording and its Trollhättan base. It became associated with efforts to convert a well-known Swedish automotive site toward electric vehicle development.

Design logic

The identity follows a functional Scandinavian approach: minimal, direct and corporate. It favors clarity and technological neutrality over expressive symbolism, matching a company focused on electric platforms and mobility systems.
