What makes this mark recognizable?

Identity cues, heritage, and visual details to keep in mind before the asset lands in your UI.

INEOS Automotive uses the bold uppercase INEOS wordmark inherited from the wider INEOS industrial group, giving the vehicle brand a direct link to its engineering and manufacturing parent.

The INEOS name dates to the late 1990s and is commonly explained as a blend connected to Inspec Ethylene Oxide Specialities and the Greek word “neos,” meaning new. When the automotive division was formed in 2017, the identity was kept deliberately plain, industrial and high-contrast rather than adopting a decorative car emblem. The Grenadier model identity added a rugged vehicle badge and nameplate, but the corporate INEOS wordmark remains the central manufacturer signature.

How the mark got here

The identity shifts that explain the INEOS logo in use today.

Origins

INEOS Automotive was established in 2017 after Sir Jim Ratcliffe identified a market opportunity for a rugged, utilitarian 4x4 following the end of production of the original Land Rover Defender. The project was conceived around durability, repairability and serious off-road use rather than lifestyle-only positioning. The Grenadier name came from The Grenadier pub in London, where the idea for the vehicle was discussed.

Connection to INEOS Group

The automotive brand takes its name and primary wordmark from INEOS Group, the chemicals and manufacturing company founded in 1998. This connection shaped the visual identity: the INEOS mark is direct, functional and industrial, reinforcing the company’s engineering-led image. Rather than building a heritage-style crest from scratch, the car brand uses the corporate wordmark as a visible signal of backing, scale and manufacturing discipline.

Grenadier launch

The INEOS Grenadier was developed as the first production vehicle from INEOS Automotive and entered series production at the former Smart factory in Hambach, France. Its product branding combines the INEOS corporate wordmark with model-specific Grenadier badging. The result is a dual identity: INEOS provides the corporate manufacturer mark, while Grenadier communicates the vehicle’s rugged, expedition-ready purpose.

When the logo changed

A compact record of redesigns, visual turns, and the reasons the mark moved.

1998

INEOS corporate wordmark established

The wider INEOS business adopted a bold red uppercase wordmark with compact letterforms and a highly legible industrial appearance. This mark later became the foundation for the automotive brand identity.

Reason for redesign: The wordmark was created as the corporate identity for the newly formed INEOS business.

2017

INEOS Automotive identity

INEOS Automotive adopted the existing INEOS wordmark for its manufacturer identity, keeping the same strong red lettering and minimal composition. The approach connected the new vehicle maker to the established INEOS industrial group.

Reason for redesign: The automotive division needed a credible manufacturer identity tied to INEOS Group rather than an unrelated new car marque.

2020

Grenadier model identity introduced

The Grenadier name and vehicle badging were introduced alongside the first public reveal of the 4x4. The model identity works with the INEOS wordmark, giving the vehicle a distinct product name while preserving the corporate manufacturer mark.

Reason for redesign: The first INEOS vehicle required a model-specific identity that could appear on the vehicle, in marketing and across retail communications.

What to preserve in production

Shape, color, and type cues that keep INEOS recognizable at app scale.

Composition

The INEOS manufacturer logo is a compact uppercase wordmark. Its composition is horizontal, direct and easy to apply across vehicle badging, digital interfaces, motorsport-style graphics, dealer signage and technical documentation.

Symbol

The logo does not rely on an animal, shield or abstract automotive symbol. Its meaning comes from the INEOS name itself, linking the vehicle maker to industrial manufacturing, chemical engineering and the practical origins of the Grenadier project.

Lettering

The typography is bold, uppercase and geometric in feel, with heavy strokes that make the name visible at small sizes and on rugged surfaces. The letterforms communicate utility and confidence rather than luxury ornament.

Color

Red is the dominant brand color for the INEOS wordmark. It gives the otherwise simple typography a strong visual signal and helps the manufacturer identity stand apart against black, white, grey and vehicle paint finishes.

Shape

The primary mark is rectangular in footprint because it is word-based. This makes it suitable for grille badges, tailgate placement, website headers and sponsor-style applications without needing a separate enclosing shape.

Heritage

INEOS Automotive is a young vehicle manufacturer, so its heritage is not based on decades of car emblems. Its visual history instead comes from the established INEOS corporate mark and the founder-led development story behind the Grenadier.

Market context

The identity is associated with the revival of a traditional, body-on-frame style off-road vehicle concept at a time when many SUVs became more comfort-oriented. The plain wordmark supports that cultural position by avoiding soft lifestyle cues.

Design logic

The design philosophy is functional, industrial and low-distraction. The logo behaves like an engineering mark: simple, durable, legible and compatible with the utilitarian character of the vehicles.
